I’m Back!

Well, long time no see everyone!

I feel like I made a similar post this time last year….my apologies friends! But it seems like sometimes life just…gets in the way! So here’s what has been going on since I’ve been away…

I joined Color Street as an Independent Nail Stylist and I could not be more excited about it! If you have NO idea what Color Street is….first of all what are you doing living under a rock?!? I kid…kind of! haha But in all seriousness I will be creating a post that talks ALL about Color Street, what it is, the opportunity and what it has done for me and all that wonderful information! So keep your eyes peeled for that!

I also have been taking a lot of online college classes in order to add a 4-9 ELA and Science license to my teaching degree! This summer I have been taking 3 courses…1 English course and two History courses. Anyone who knows me, knows that History is NOT my thing…sorry to any history guru’s out there but Science and Language Arts has always been my go-to and my strongest subjects! But I’m rocking these classes and will only have one more class left once the summer semester is over! I could not be more excited!

In other news, I feel like this year has just flown by.

Junes Over
I saw this on Instagram and had to re-create it! It had me cracking up! Hopefully it gives someone else a little laugh too!

I feel like yesterday was literally January first and now it’s already July 5th?!? I mean seriously, time needs to slow down just a little bit. I would like to relax and enjoy the last month of summer! Don’t get me wrong I miss my kiddos and I miss the hustle and bustle of the school year, BUT I am not ready to go back….not yet anyways! I know, let’s rewind and start summer over! Anyone else think that sounds like a great idea?!?

My Second Guest Blogger!

I am SO excited to announce my second guest Blogger!!!

Brittany is a hard working mom with an amazing story and I am so beyond excited to be able to share it with you all! Her story is a powerful one, one that brought me to tears at times. You’ll know what I mean when you read it.

With that being said, I want to thank Brittany for sharing this story with me, and with the world! It takes a lot of bravery to share your life, especially when there are rocky parts….those are the pieces that no one likes to talk about. But those are also the pieces that mold and shape you into the person that you are meant to be.

My First Guest Blogger!

Happy Thursday!

Last week when I announced that I was re-launching my blog after taking some time off that I was going to try some new things on the blog! One of those new things is having guest bloggers! I am super excited to announce my first guest blogger!

Maryann Morehouse! Maryann is an “author who loves to find the beauty that surrounds us” (I took that straight from her Instagram bio! You should give her a follow: @marmorehouse ) This next part I am summarizing from her amazon profile!

Maryann was born and raised in Connecticut and grew up surrounded by the love and chaos of her five siblings and two adoring parents. In college she would often write short stories for her college roommate and a select audience, a tradition she carried on for many years. When life’s bump’s and potholes tried to detour her from her path (illness of one of her children, divorce, and an unexpected career change) her college roommate, her two kids, and her current husband were there to put her back on the right track. Finding solace and strength from escaping the real world for a little while and creating a world of her own, Maryann often found that a cup of coffee or tea, some headphones and her laptop were much cheaper than therapy and just as rewarding.

After years of encouragement she took a leap of faith and made her books available to the public. She continues to spend her free time writing stories from her various “coffee shop offices” located wherever and whenever possible, the only difference is; now her audience is larger, yet just as supportive.

Her two novels (currently available for kindle on amazon.com), Nobody Would Believe; and A Promise on A Star have made it on my “to read list” and I think that they will make it on yours too after reading this amazing piece that she so graciously allowed me to share with all of you. Also according to herAmazon profile, keep an eye out for her third book Watch for Gracie, which is coming to Amazon soon!

Her writing is amazing, absolutely breathtaking to be completely honest. As I read through this piece I got goosebumps and she had me sobbing by the end. I do not know this woman personally, in face we have only had a very brief conversation. One where she said she was willing to send me something for my blog, she did, I read it and I told her how her writing impacted me. Nothing more.

So Maryann, I will say it again. Thank you for being brave, brave enough to share this with me and my readers. I am honored to have you as my first guest blogger and I look forward to having you on here again in the future!

Okay I will be done blabbering now so you can read her amazing work!

Long Time No Chat…

Hello to all of my fellow blog friends!!

Well to say that I sucked at blogging in 2018 would be an understatement….sorry about that! BUT all that really matters is that I’m back and I’m ready to conquer 2019!

So I know some of you are probably wondering where I’ve been since the last time I posted….back in what was it July? Well let me tell you! (I promise I’ll keep this short! No need for a whole life recap!)

I can’t remember if I told you or not but I decided to go back to school! I’m getting my ELA and Science Liceseure for grades 4-9! So to be completely honest that and work has taken up the majority of my time the past few months! Over the summer I only took one course, but when fall semester came around, something in my head said “yes Shelby, working a full time job, teaching at the gym part time, having a boyfriend, having a social life, spending time with family AND taking 3 online classes (one graduate level English course might I add) sounds like a FABULOUS idea! Please, do it!” (Please note the sarcasm in my voice!) To be completely honest I have NO idea what I was thinking! BUT I made it out alive with two A’s and a B+! I would call that a win! Spring semester is right around the corner and I can tell you that I did NOT make the same mistake this time! I’m taking ONE class this semester, mostly so I can get back into my part time coaching business! I missed it so much! (That was something else that had to be put on hold so I didn’t lose my mind!)

Anyways, I also quit teaching at the gym. It was stressing me out and to be completely honest I found no joy in going to the gym….ever. Not even to do my own workouts. But to be honest that’s a whole separate blog topic! Maybe I’ll bring that to you soon!

So, what are my plans for 2019 with this blog? I’m not going to have a set schedule for myself….as much as that scares me, I want these posts to be authentic and genuine and from the heart. So if I’m fishing for content…that’s not the case. So I’m going to post as often as I can (at minimum once a month!) and I’m going to do my best to bring you a wider variety of content as well! Fitness, Teaching, Books, Makeup, Family, Dating…hey maybe I’ll even have some guests create some posts as well! We’ll see!

Before I go…let’s do something fun! A little year end review and look forward! (Disclaimer: I have no idea where these questions came from originally. I googled year end review and looked at different images that had questions, this particular one did not have a link to where it came from, if anyone has any idea as to who I can give credit to please let me know!)

  1. One word to describe your year: Busy
  2. Best thing you did for someone else this year: That’s a good question…I mean I know I do things for other people but it’s not like I keep a running tab of what I do for who and when….so I’m not sure how to answer that one actually
  3. Favorite movie of the year: I would have to say A Star is Born
  4. Favorite show of the year: My favorite shows are always Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago PD
  5. Most Embarrassing Moment of the year: I don’t think I had one…at least not that I can think of….
  6. Time you laughed the hardest this year: Honestly anytime I’m with my boyfriend and his family especially if his sister is there because we just laugh constantly
  7. Something you learned to do/had never done before: Umm…I don’t think I learned to do anything new….I’m starting to think that 2018 was an uneventful year for me haha
  8. Most newsworthy event: In my life personally…nothing. In the world…..there was a lot. I would have to say that the most newsworthy event that is worth mentioning would have been the March for Our Lives Event.
  9. Biggest lesson learned:
  10. Favorite place you visited this year: The Lake
  11. An Achievement You are Proud of : Finishing one round of 80 Day Obsession!
  12. What or Whom are you most thankful for: My parents and my boyfriend and his family. They are all my greatest supporters and my biggest fans and without them I wouldn’t be who I am today or accomplishing the things that I am.

Well loves that’s all I have for now! I promise my posts will be more exciting from here on out!

Book Review Thought and Review Card

Life’s Greatest Lesson by Allen R. Hunt is such an amazing representation of this definition.

My boyfriend’s father gave me this book. He said that he was given it after Mass one day and he saw me reading out at the lake and asked me if I had ever read this book. He told me that he couldn’t put it down when he started reading it.

It’s kind of funny because he brought it to me at a perfect time. I was just finishing up another book when he handed it to me so I was excited to read it. When he first handed it to me I quickly scanned the back of the book and he told me a little bit about how it started out and I was super excited to start reading! But what I didn’t realize was the impact that it would have on me.

This story talks about a 10-year-old boy whose grandmother just passed away. He has been appointed the caretaker of her bracelet…a rubber bracelet with the letters LEGS on it. As we read through the book we follow the grandson of this amazing woman on a journey, the journey of discovering what each letter on that special bracelet stands for. This young boy spent every single day with his grandfather that summer, learning as much as he could about that bracelet and the legacy that his grandmother had left behind.

This was what the letters on the bracelet stood for.

Ya know it’s funny because part of my wants to tell you every single little detail of this book. I want to share with you everything I felt while reading it. But I’m going to refrain because I want you to experience it for yourself. I want you to feel the same feelings that I felt as I read it, and I feel like if I tell you certain things then I will be taking that opportunity away from you and that’s the last thing I want to do.

What I will tell you is this…the way it made me feel. See, I was raised in the Catholic Church. I grew up going to Church every weekend, I was even blessed enough to have been able to attend a Catholic School (preschool – college) and I am eternally grateful for that experience and my faith. However, I don’t think that I was ever…ever taught to look at my faith…like this; and ya know what…I wish that I would’ve been. Why? Because my eyes have been opened to a whole new outlook on life.

The things that we have…they are just things. Do we need certain things? Yeah. You need a house to shelter you, you need food in your stomach, clothes on your back and a vehicle to get you from point a to point b (though that one could be debatable because there are other ways to transport yourself but that’s beside the point). Anyways. The things we have are just that. They are things. That’s not why God put us here. That’s not our purpose. Our purpose isn’t to work our lives away and buy materialistic thing after materialistic thing.

Now I feel like I’m rambling. Anyways. Your mission in life is to find something you’re passionate about. Find something that you want to help make better.

I’m not going to lie, I cried…several times reading this book. Not because it was sad, but because I was realizing so many things that I COULD be doing…that I SHOULD be doing.

So, here is my mission (when you read the book you will understand where this is coming from). I’m making my list. I’m making my goals and I am going to do whatever it takes, to start living my life as a LEGS life, and I think everyone else should too.

I know I haven’t said much, and it’s not because I don’t want to. Trust me I do. I want to say so much more. But I want you to experience this book without it being ruined for you. Just trust me when I say that this is a must – read. Catholic or not. So I will leave you with this quote from the book….the one that gave me my “ah-ha” moment while reading this book.

St Peter

My answer….is no….full speed ahead!

New Name…New Adventure…

Friends!!! Do I have something EXCITING for you!!!

First of all if you haven’t noticed the blog is getting a new look! I hope that you are enjoying it as much as I am! But if you’ve been around a while you’re probably wondering….why?!? Especially with the name change because I just LOVED my name (The Itty Bitty Fitty Litty) but I promise you that there is a good reason behind it.

So a few months a go I was invited by my friend Danielle to take on this amazing opportunity…and that was to become a Health and Fitness Coach.

Now you’re probably thinking…umm Shelby but you were already a Health and Fitness instructor isn’t that the same thing. Nope!!

Okay…so I’m getting a little a head of myself. Let me first tell you how I got here!

My Story

As you already know (or maybe you don’t) I started my health and fitness journey back in 2011. (I have a full blog post on it so if you want to read it you can click here ) Or if you want to read the short version…keep reading!

Back in 2011 I weight 220 pounds, I was so comfortable with myself that I didn’t realize how unhealthy I was or that I was unhappy. I actually thought that I was happy and that I was content with myself and I saw no reason to change anything. I worked out occasionally…and by occasionally I mean when my mom literally dragged me to the gym and I hated every single minute of it…ask her…I was awful…but she was a trooper and I appreciate her so much for all that she did for me!

Then one day…and I wish that I could tell you the exact day…or time…or moment or what exactly it was that made me snap, but I did, and I couldn’t stand the way that I was feeling. I couldn’t stand the way that I looked in pictures and I just wanted to change something. So this time I knew that it was time to start listening to my mom a little more and hating the gym a little less. So I started to utilize my gym membership on a regular basis. The first 10 pounds or so came off pretty quickly and I got excited and encourage. Then…I hit that first plateau and I immediately wanted to give up. But then I slowly started to change my eating habits and my body slowly started to change again.

As time went on I slowly started to change other things as well. I started adding in other types of workouts. Then I met my friend (and coach and mentor and just an amazing person!) Danielle. I have known Danielle for 7 years now and I am so grateful and thankful for this girl!

When I first met Danielle she introduced me to some awesome workouts (at-home workouts) and an amazing healthy super-food shake that tastes like ice cream and she helped me to change my outlook on fitness. But she gave me more than that too.

Over the past few years Danielle has come to me several times about this Coaching opportunity…and let me just tell you I didn’t just hop right in and say yes. In fact the first dozen (or more) times that she asked me I said no. I sat on the sidelines and watched her as she paid off her student loans and talked about helping people…all from social media. I’m not gonna lie I just thought “I’m not a person who can SELL other people things…” but that’s not what we do at all.

So finally I jumped into one of her “sneak peek” coaching events on Facebook and I thought to myself…maybe I can do this. I finally said yes. I was a senior in college, going through student teaching and edTPA and a bunch of other things and let me just tell you that was NOT the time to add something else to my plate. But I was determined, but not determined enough. I can honestly say that when I said yes the first time I was not in a place to take this on. I heard about 3 people tell me “no” when asking them to trust in me and the products that I believe in…and I shut down. I thought that it was all me and all my fault and that no one was going to want to join me. So I quit.

I gave up on myself because I thought that it was my fault. That I wasn’t good enough to help people. Truth be told I just had too much on my plate. But I continued to watch Danielle. I continued to be her “customer” and I continued to fall in love with the programs and the company.

Then she asked me again this year, and at first I said no a few more time. I kept giving her excuses and she just kept giving me that “girlfriend come on now” look. Well eventually I said yes. I dove right in and I have been giving it my all. Guess what…I’m going anywhere this time! I’m here to stay and I am here to go straight to the top with my team.

This team is more than just a team. These women are nothing short of amazing. I’ve only met a few of them in person and they all feel like they are my sisters. I love each and every one of them so much and I am so grateful for this opportunity to have this sisterhood in my life. I am grateful for my new found love of fitness and my ability to help people find their passion as well. I am grateful for the opportunities that are waiting for me financially because of this opportunity and the ability to help people find their financial freedom as well.

Whether you’re a teacher like me, a stay-at-home mom or someone that works a 9-5 desk job in the cooperate world. If you love fitness or you are just starting your fitness journey. I want YOU to know that I am here for YOU. I am here to give YOU a chance at the same opportunities that have been placed in front of me.

Have questions? Want more information? Leave me a comment. Shoot me an email. I would love to chat with you!

Chemistry (no not the subject)

Book Review Summary Title Card

Three years into her graduate studies at a demanding Boston university, the unnamed narrator of this nimbly wry, concise debut finds her one-time love for chemistry is more hypothesis than reality. She’s tormented by her failed research–and reminded of her delays by her peers, her advisor, and most of all by her Chinese parents, who have always expected nothing short of excellence from her throughout her life. But there’s another, nonscientific question looming: the marriage proposal from her devoted boyfriend, a fellow scientist, whose path through academia has been relatively free of obstacles, and with whom she can’t make a life before finding success on her own.

Eventually, the pressure mounts so high that she must leave everything she thought she knew about her future, and herself, behind. And for the first time, she’s confronted with a question she won’t find the answer to in a textbook: What do I really want? Over the next two years, this winningly flawed, disarmingly insightful heroine learns the formulas and equations for a different kind of chemistry–one in which the reactions can’t be quantified, measured, and analyzed; one that can be studied only in the mysterious language of the heart. Taking us deep inside her scattered, searching mind, here is a brilliant new literary voice that astutely juxtaposes the elegance of science, the anxieties of finding a place in the world, and the sacrifices made for love and family.

Book Review Thought and Review Card

Honestly I really liked this book! When I first started reading it I was really concerned that I wouldn’t like it. But the more I read it the more I couldn’t put it down.

This debut novel is a cautionary tale (if you will) for those who might put too much pressure on their children to succeed academically, or maybe you push yourself too hard in certain areas of your life.

Chemistry Quote

The unnamed narrator of this debut novel by Weike Wang is a PhD student studying Chemistry at a university in Boston. She has been studying for several years and has yet to have a research breakthrough that will lead her to her ultimate goal…completing her dissertation, receiving her PhD, and hopefully getting a job. Much to the frustration of her Chinese parents, who accept nothing less than success from her; they want nothing to do with excuses, delays, explanations…basically if she doesn’t get her PhD…she is no longer their daughter.Oh and did I mention she lives with her boyfriend and her dog….something else her parents don’t know (the boyfriend not the dog).

As if all of these academic challenges aren’t enough for this poor girl, her longtime boyfriend Eric has proposed marriage. Now you would think this would be easy. She either loves him or she doesn’t. So she’s either going to say yes or she’s going to say no. But it’s not that simple. Eric is a fellow scientist who had followed his academic dreams without any challenges and he is on the cusp of getting a teaching job somewhere….that isn’t Boston. And he doesn’t understand why she can’t accept the possibility that perhaps chemistry and maybe science as a whole…just isn’t for her. The only thing he is sure of is how RIGHT they are for each other. So he also can’t fathom why she won’t accept his proposal and go with him wherever his new job takes him and ultimately stop letting her parents rule her life.

But how can she just give up her dreams like that? And to follow a boy! Could they really build a life together?

The pressure all starts to become too much to bear for our unnamed narrator and she makes a decision that drastically changes everything. Leaving her with no idea what she wants out of her career, relationship, from her parents or even herself. Should she become a teacher? Should she marry Eric and follow him to wherever his job takes him? Should she tell her parents how she really feels or continue to work and finally make them proud of her? The possibilities are endless and the dilemmas she faces turn her into a completely different person that she doesn’t recognize or even like.

You’ll have to read it to find out what happens with that!

So a little bit about the style of writing. The author has the narrator (who is unnamed) telling the story in such a style that would lead one to believe that English is not her first language. So at time she is vary stilted, but it honestly works really well in this novel. This character doesn’t really come off as a warm and fuzzy type of person, however we are given small glimpses of her vulnerability and emotional side when she talks about her parents, especially her mother. She defends her to no end even though she probably shouldn’t.

This quirky book might not be for everyone. But as our narrator attempts to look for answers to her problems in life, she is also finding her way. It’s comical, emotional and sometimes flawed.

Just don’t let the title trick you. Though there are small bursts of chemistry lessons in here I promise it’s nothing too intense and it won’t give you flash backs to high school. (Though there is a mention of organic chemistry so if you took that in college like I did you might have a flash back from that! Haha)

Happy reading!

Ballardvale Blues

Book Review Summary Title Card

Coming of age doesn’t always happen in your teens. For Addie, Kate, Sam, Jessica, and Danny, college has ended and the future is coming whether they’re ready or not. While Addie stands still watching all those around surge blindly toward what they believe to be the right path. thoughts from her four friends creep into her mind and replace her feelings of complacence with doubt. Friendships intertwined in a messy web splinter and slowly break as the warring belief systems of those in their early twenties come to lure the five friends into separate offshoots, forcing Addie to choose a life plan as clear as those who surround her.

Book Review Thought and Review Card

Before I hop into my thoughts and review I just want to give a full disclaimer: This book was sent to me by the Author (Rachel Veznaian) in exchange for an honest review. So a huge thank you to Rachel Veznaian for sending me your book!

As many of you know I’m a teacher and I picked this book up in January thinking I could speed through it in a month (2 at the most) because school is super busy and I don’t always have as much free time to read as I would like. WELL that didn’t happen! I just finished the book!

Now that doesn’t mean that I didn’t like it because I actually did! I thought that Ballardvale Blues was a great coming of ago story for these college graduates!

You have a group of friends just starting out in adulthood, they’re all beginning to realize that they are heading down different paths…some are staying in Ballardvale, others are traveling to get away from it. They had the summer to spend together and we get to follow them through it.

Character building and the writing in general was one that kind of sucked me in. Mostly because I kept wanting more! I kept wanting to know, is Addie going to cave and go with Kate to New York or is she going to stay at home where she is clearly miserable just to please her parents? That particular story line was what really had me sucked in. I just kept thinking, poor Addie. The girl couldn’t even breathe without her mother down her back.

I will say, I am an only child BUT my life is NOTHING like that. My parents (both of them) support me no matter what decisions I make in life. They support me going to school, they support my job and my hobbies and my passions. I cannot even begin to imagine living in a house where they didn’t. My heart just ached for her.

Overall, Ballardvale Blues was a very relatable story to read. I found a little piece of each character that I could relate to. However, I think that the only criticism (for lack of a better word) that I have is that I honestly wanted more. Like is there a second book coming soon that talks about New York and the lives of the characters that moved there (I don’t want to give anything away so no names are being mentioned….you want to know? Read the book!). Can we get some more information on how those who are staying in Ballardvale are doing now that some of their “clique” has left? So many questions left unanswered!

Again, thank you to Rachel Veznaian for sending me a copy of your book! I would LOVE to read any of your future books!

Have you read this book? What were your thoughts?? Let me know in the comments below!
